We,”Tokushima Satellite Office”project team,are promoting remote work in the beautiful country side of Tokushima prefecture.
Many people realize their way of working and living in the rich natural environment and interaction with people.
We will introduce the reports of people who are actually immigrated from overseas and realize their way of working in Tokushima.

多くの人が豊かな自然環境と人との交流を通じて、自分らしい働き方や生き方を実現されています。
今回は実際に海外から移住され、徳島で自分らしい働き方を実現している皆さんのレポートをご紹介します。

Matt Lawson（Kamiyama-cho,Tokushima）
We had been living in Takamatsu, Kagawa in a mansion. I was working remotely as a software engineer. I grew up in a beach - mountain town in California. I was feeling rather unhappy living in a mansion (apartment building) and I urged my family to make a move.
We sold everything we owned and went traveling for over a year around the world with just our suitcases. We attempted to live in California but the cost of living was burning through our limited life savings like a wildfire. We decided to move back to Japan where we had more opportunities and advantages, such as low cost healthcare and a larger family base.
We agreed we would move to a mountain town, but where? We wanted somewhere between Kyushu and Kagawa as I don't like it too cold. I stumbled upon a Washington Post article titled “With rural Japan shrinking and aging, a small town seeks to stem the trend”.This single article was enough for me and we jumped on a plane and came to Kamiyama blurry eyed, with both hands full with our 2 young kids and suitcases. After some luck we found an old house in Shimobun neighborhood which needed extensive remodeling.
For the first 6 months I worked out of the Kamiyama Community Co-Work Offices until my home was remodeled. I ended up building a brand new all-wood office as an add on to our old house so I no longer needed to work from the Co-Work offices. It was about this time that I stopped working in Tech all together and switched careers and started a Coffee Roasting Company called “Kamiyama Coffee”. Recently we built a takeout cafe next to a local popular grocery store (Katayama Grocery Store) named “Buddha Takeout”.
What really makes Kamiyama so unique is the community. Each neighborhood is closely connected and residents are strongly encouraged to participate in local events and in general help one another. One example sticks out in my mind, where a neighbor whom I had never met died. I was summoned to her house and was asked to help prepare for her funeral. About 20 members of my neighborhood shared efforts in setting up her house for the funeral and cooking food, etc. I felt so fortunate and lucky to be living in a community where everyone looked out for each other.
Another example is how the local schools take extremely good care our children. In bigger cities we could never expect to get such incredible care. There are on average only 15 children per class which allows for specialized teaching and care for each child. My wife and I know every parent on a first name basis.
Im very excited about my future in Japan and in particular Kamiyama. I love business and dreaming up new companies. My wife and I have a dream to create a hotel resort that fits the beautiful and dynamic environment of the mountains. I imagine a resort hotel with stone walking paths, 3 meter deep hot pools and long-stay hotel rooms made of cedar wood with our restaurant to serve the hotel guests. The dreaming helps to keep me strong and passionate.
Recently I noticed that I was the happiest I have been in over 25 years! Thanks to the wonderful life I get to live in Kamiyama I am very happy.

当時、香川県高松に住んでいた私は、ソフトウェアエンジニアとしてリモートワークをしていました。自然あふれるカリフォルニアのビーチタウンで育った私は、町中のマンションでの生活に不満を感じ、家族で移住先を探すことにしました。
私たちは持ちものを売り、スーツケースだけで世界各地を1年以上旅行しました。カリフォルニアにも住みましたが、生活費がとても高く、貯金をも食いつくしてしまいそうだったので、低コストで健康保険制度や妻の家族がいることなど、機会や利点がより多い日本に帰国を決めました。
日本に住む場所を決めるにあたり、山間部に住むことを決めたのはいいのですが、どこに住むのか？ということになりました。寒過ぎるところは苦手な私たち家族は、九州と四国に絞って探し始めました。そのときたまたま、 ワシントンポストの記事 「農村日本の縮小と高齢化に伴い、小さな町がこの流れを止めようとしている」を目にしたのですが、この記事１つで私には十分でした。まだ小さかった子供2人と両手いっぱいの荷物で飛行機に飛び乗り、やっとの思いで神山にたどり着きました。何週間かの家探しの結果、結構な改装が必要ではありましたが、運良く、空き家屋を見つけることができたのです。
最初、家が改築されるまでの間は、神山サテライトオフィスコンプレックスから仕事をしていましたが、結局、自宅に杉の木のオフィスができてからというもの、サテライトオフィスから仕事をする必要はなくなってしまいました。長年続けていたITの仕事をやめ、それまでとは職種の違った、「KAMIYAMA COFFEE」というコーヒー豆焙煎業を始めたのはこの頃でした。最近は、地元の食料品店（片山食料品店）の隣にテイクアウトカフェを始めました。
神山町をきわめて魅力的にしているのは、コミュニティのおかげです。各地域は密接に結ばれていて、住民は地元の行事に参加し、お互いに助け合います。いくつかの例の1つとして思い浮かぶのは、会ったことのない近所のおばあちゃんが亡くなった時のことです。そのおばあちゃんの家に集まって、彼女の葬儀の準備を手伝うために近所の約20人のメンバーが、葬儀や料理の準備の手助けをしていました。みんなが助け合いながら暮らしている地域に住んでいることは、本当にありがたいことです。
神山が魅力的なことのもう一つは、地元の学校や保育所の先生たちが子供たちの面倒をよく見てくれているということです。都市部では、このようなケアを期待することはできませんでした。平均してクラスあたり15人の少人数のため、各子供に特化した指導や補助ができるのでしょう。私の妻と私はクラスメートの親をフルネームで知っているほどです。
日本での、特に神山町での私の未来は、希望に満ち溢れています。私はビジネスアイデアを考えるのが好きなので、常に新しいプロジェクトを夢見ています。私たちの将来の夢は、神山の山なみの美しくダイナミックな環境にぴったりなゲストハウスリゾートをつくることです。石畳の遊歩道、深さ3メートルくらいの温泉プール、杉でできた長期滞在型のホテルの部屋を備えたリゾートホテルに併設されたの私たちのレストランで食事を提供していることを想像しています。将来の夢をもつことは、私の情熱をかきたててくれます。
最近の私は、ここ25年間のなかで一番幸せかもしれません！神山町で素晴らしい生活ができるおかげです。私はほんとに幸せものです。
